Why Posture Matters

Have you ever been told to “sit up straight”? It may seem like a simple phrase, but posture is more important than you think. Good posture is vital to your overall health and offers a variety of benefits, including reduced back pain, increased energy, and better balance. In addition, proper posture helps you maintain correct form while exercising, which results in fewer injuries.

The good news about posture is that it can be improved and corrected over time. By working with our experienced physiotherapist, you can learn if your symptoms are caused by poor posture and how to fix it.

Home Exercises for Posture Correction

If neck or back pain is bothering you at home, there are a few exercises that you can try for posture correction and discomfort improvements. Before you attempt any at-home exercise, it’s crucial that you speak with your physiotherapist to make sure that they are safe for you and your specific condition. In addition, you should always practice home exercises in a safe place with support, such as a bed, chair, or couch.

Home exercises for poor posture include:

  • Retractions: Position yourself against the back of a chair with your spine touching the backrest. Gently lean your chest and shoulders behind the chair. Hold for a few seconds, and then release. This exercise helps to correct forward head posture.
  • Cat-Camel Stretch: On the floor or bed, rest on your hands and knees. Then, align your wrists below your shoulders and your knees beneath your hips. Arch your back like a cat, turning your chin towards your chest. Next, let your belly drop towards the floor, lifting your head and tailbone. Repeat this movement for several repetitions.
  • Standing Lumbar Extension: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Place your hands on the small of your back. Slowly bend your spine back as far as you comfortably can. Hold the end position for a few seconds, then return to a fully upright position. Repeat for ten repetitions.
  • Overhead Reaching: Sit straight in a chair with your shoulders back and down.

Interlace your fingers and lift your arms above your head. Next, turn your palms away from you, towards the ceiling, and push up as far as you can. While you hold this position, notice the stretch in your shoulders and sides.
